Raw Design Studio

Based in Salford
http://www.weareraw.co.uk/

'We create thoughtful pieces of design and creative communications, with a focus on craftsmanship and collaboration.

Ours is a simple approach: we take the time to get to know our clients, we do all that we can to understand the people they’re trying to reach, then we take what we know and create memorable, relevant pieces of work.
The ability to deliver good ideas and strong design transcend sectors but most of our work tends to be within health, sports, Corporate Social Responsibility and communications for youthful audiences.'

PLACEMENT OPPORTUNITY

Placements. You want one? Well, we can offer you one, but it’ll cost you… 1 creative project to be exact. Best case scenario, you’ll get a month-long placement and some recognition for your efforts. Worst case scenario, you’ll have a lovely new project to add to your portfolio.

As the origin of Raw Type is based on typographic experimentation, we thought we’d stick to our roots with an open brief encouraging the same process. We want you to create a typeface based on one of the following themes; time, sound, photography orlight. As well as the typeface, we’d like you to create a poster promoting your creation.

Technical Spec

Themes: Time, Sound, Photography, Light
Typeface: A-Z and 0-9. Extra points for more glyphs, upper & lower-case etc.
Poster: A2 portrait/landscape
Deadline: 15th April 2011

How to Submit: PDFs, no larger than 5MB to submit@rawtype.co.uk. Must contain The typeface, poster and explanatory text about the idea and method.

We will pick our favourite from each theme and then open it up to the design community to select the overall best and winner of the placement. If you have any questions, use the comments below – that way, everyone can benefit. Have fun everyone!

This could be an amazing opportunity. Better get designing...

http://www.markstudio.co.uk/

Mark Studio is an independent branding and graphic design studio, who like to keep things simple.

What I like about MArk is the brand identity's and logo's they have created. I love their use of type and it's appropriateness. Their work is simple and effective, uncluttered and clear, and makes you go 'Oh that's clever'. I like their editorial work and other print based media. I also like the fact that they have done work for Wigan Little Theatre (my home town, Wigan), and also won awards for this from Design Week for their promotional Brochure in 2009.

They have an impressive raneg of clients, including: Amnesty International, BT Wholesale, Manchester City Council, Manchester City FC, Marks & Spencer, Royal Mail and The Comedy Store.

I like this agency and how alot of their work is print based. Their work is original, edgy and refreshing.
Their attention to detail, print finishes and use of typography within their work, represents the brand effectively.

I would like to contact this design agency as one of my ten. Here is a contact for their creative director:

OUGD202 - End of Module Evaluation

Throughout the duration of this module I have learnt alot about my own design practice. I found design for screen to be enjoyable and satisfying. I enjoyed working in After Effects and applying knowledge learnt form the workshops, and also when I got a result better than I thought it would turn out to be. With beign new to motion graphics I found it interesting and something I would like to develop further, as it can give you alot of options for possible design solutions/outcomes. I have also learnt how to organise my time better, and found staying behind later in college impacted on the quantity of work I managed to produce in the given time. It was also useful as I do not have the After Effects on my own laptop.

I found that when researching it was best to start the design process with finding out as much information as I could about the subject to help me make informed design decision. It also helps with the direction of my design work as it can lead you in different directions in terms of tone of voice, style, and who the potential audience is.

The strengths I feel that have come through in this module show through in my motion graphics, as I got the hang of using the After Effects programme. I also found that storyboarding and working with timelines was a very important part of design for screen and is best to work out exactly what you want to do before going anywhere near the computer. This was a great method and I enjoyed coming up with design variations, and working with the frame and how the assets move around within it.

One thing I have noticed as a weakness in my design work is that I tend to prioritise which idea I think has the most potential, and don't explore the other ideas as deep. I realise that I should make sure I exhaust every direction to see which styles and outcomes I could end up with, becuase I could surprise myself and end up with totally different, more effective outcomes.

Thinking to what I have done and what I would do differently next time, I definately will develop my ideas further to gain different possible directions. To stop staying safe with design, try to come up with more original concepts and think outside the box more, so I surprise myself with the ideas I come up with. To keep my blog more organisated and keep on top of it. And also I will make sure that when it comes to crits, that I bring enough work and make sure it is clear with the ideas/concept I am trying to get across, and ask what I need to know about my design work and how it could be improved, so I come away more benefited with help toward my design development.

Task 1 - Who am I? Who are they?

Write a list of all the possible client groups that use graphic design in the development, production, distribution, promotion and/or communication of their products or services. Identify one client group that reflects your current ambitions within the graphic design area and focus on identifying:

Possible client groups include; businesses, retail and services, advertisers, publications-newspaper and magazines.
The area of graphic design I would most like to work in would be publications, advertising, promotions, brand identity.
The skills I possess are; the use of software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and a basic knowledge of After Effects and Quark Express, working with type and colour, photography and the manipulation of it within Photoshop, creating appropriate brand identities, crafting, an understanding of professional print processes, collaboration work.
I will need to develop skills in areas such as layout design, web design (as this is something I have never done), packaging design, I also would like speed up the pace of my design work.
My own professional and creative aims are to create a fantastic portfolio that I am proud of, to work for a variation of clients, so I am always learning new things and creating very different work, to develop my own style/identity so people will know it is my work when they see it.
