What is a line? Brief Rationale

The Brief:
Using the manipulation of line, frame, format, media and colour, I have to produce a body of work that visually investigates to definition of the word line.
The quote I have chosen to base my investiagtion on is ''A formation of people, objects or things on besides/behind the other.
The workshop that I have chosen for my brief to be based upon is the photography workshop.

Considerations:
Time management, practical work, photography, contextual/theoretical relevance
I need to develop and catalog a range of investigative and experimental approaches in response to the quote I have chosen. I also need to document the application and evaluation of media.

Interview with Karl Mead

Why have you chosen to study Graphic Design?
Well, I started off by studying Art at GCSE level and I really liked woodwork and 3d work. With my style being very graphic esque, I was told I should focus on Graphic Design. After doing a National Diploma and an Art Foundation course I realised this was what I wanted to do.

Why did you choose to study in Leeds at the College of Art?
I’m originally from Norfolk and there isn’t much around there. I think Leeds has a nice vibe, and there is everything here. As for the College, I found it to be a very comfortable and welcoming place.

How are you enjoying student life?
I’m really enjoying it. I like going out every now and again. The diet could definitely be better, but I’m not a very good cook!

What is your favourite food?
Mums roast dinner or course. But being up in Leeds, I usually cook simple things like egg on toast, or go out for a spicy Mexican.

Are you missing home?
I miss not seeing my family and friends as much.

How often do you go home?
I go back at least once a month. I’m trying to get used to living on my own.

What inspires you as a Graphic designer?
I get my inspiration from books, and seeing other people’s work. I like the style of work by Andre Venger and Alphons Mucha. I also like gypsy tattoo art.

Do you have a favourite designer?
I like the work of Oded Ezer, with his own unique, Arabic style, and how he works with calligraphy and makes it 3d.

What do you want to do when you finish the course?
I really want to go travelling in Asia, as a bit of a break before getting a job with a design agency. I would prefer to work in London, and then hopefully in New York in the future.

In Design - Workshop Brief

The Brief:
Produce a double page spread based upon Karl Mead.
The content should be information gathered from an interview, and also from their blog.

Considerations:
Explore layout, type, image, colour, and how they relate to each other.
The legibility of the information is to be considered carefully.

Target Audience:
Students who are also studying graphic design. And younger people who are thinking of studying graphic design.

No particular message to it, just represents fashion with people and fabric
Looks feminine, communicates effectively

Has the posters answered the brief?

Layout, colour, style of drawings
The illustrations are effective as they are elegant and feminine
I like the middle poster with the hand rendered face. Almost looks like the face is being constructed to what you need to look like
Well drawn, good photos, nice layout

What could be developed further?
Typography - possibly get rid of the word Vogue. Have words that suggest Vogue.
Perhaps experiment with different type, middle posters colour is good, play with layout slightly.
Different compositions
Make text more clear, and maybe add some more typography
Development of face, different patterns/fabric perhaps?

Further Feedback...
Middle poster is cool I like the style
My preferred poster is the middle one, I like the elegance of the poster, and the layering of the imagery.
Explore drawing, manipulation of the face works well

Evaluation of Feedback:
I have chosen to submit the middle, subtle coloured image, for the competition as it was the one my group thought was the best. However I need to tweek it a little bit and maybe add some type to it as well.

OUGD102 - End of Module Self Evaluation

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

Throughout this module I think I have found a deeper understanding for the need to research, and how it's importance contributes to the development of the design process. Researching helps you to understand what is needed to communicate with the public, and I think I have done thisquite effectively to produce work that is visually engaging to its specific audience.
I have also become more aware of how I am spending my time, through the time management workshop and it has helped me to create schedules to work by, in order to make the most of the time I have.

2. What approaches to/methods of research have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

Learning and understanding different types of researching including primary, secondary, quantitive and qualitative have been usful to gain different elements of research for your subect matter. I particularly liked using results from questionnaire's as they consisted of different people's opinions, so I could develop my design work according to the results.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

I like using photography from first hand observations, to work with as starting points for design development. In some briefs I have created and used stencils from these that have proved to be visually interesting. I like coming up with clever designs, and concepts with alterier meanings.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these more fully?

I used to tend to come up with a particular idea and work towards creating that. In a way I do still prioritise and choose ideas that I like more than others, and spend most of my time developing them instead of giving the other ideas a chance. I will need to broaden my ideas and devlopment work in future design to gain different outcomes.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

1. I will develop my skills in Adobe illustrator, as I tend to use photoshop mostly. As it offers you different ways of devloping ideas.
2. I need to be more organised when it comes to mhy design sheets and sketchbooks, so I can see what is missing and what I need to find out more of.
3. I will use the studio in the evenings as it offers a better working environment, and I can produce more work.
4. I will try to be more assertive in crits, and learn from other people's work styles, to help me understand my own style more.
5. I will use reasearch as a way of directing my design process.

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas:

Attendance - 4

Punctuality - 3

Motivation - 4

Commitment - 4

Quantity of work produced - 4

Quality of work produced - 4

Contribution to the group - 5

Why do they need to know?
To make their travel experience more entertaining

What will they respond to?
The children wil be able to use the contents of the package to entertain themselves

What research is required?
Primary: Questionnaire, asking people what they used as entertainment on different forms of transport, when they were younger. And, observing travellers and what they do for entertainment when travelling (buses, trains, car)
Secondary: Packaging/existing products/entertainment packages in different company's. Artist Research

OUGD102 - Collection 100. Rational

I have chosen to do Product & Packaging, as it is something that the audience will be able to use and interact with.
My target audience for the product will be for children who need a source of entertainment whilst on long journeys. However I need to take into consideration that the product will be most likely bought by the childs parent.
The function of this product will be to entertain.
The audience will interact with the product as the open, and use it.

OUGD102 - Collection 100. Presentation
